Policies & School Procedures

Scoil Sinéad National School is committed to providing a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment for all pupils. Our policies guide the day-to-day operation of the school and support best practice in teaching, learning, wellbeing, safeguarding and governance.

All policies are developed in line with Department of Education requirements, relevant legislation and national guidelines, and are reviewed regularly to ensure they remain current and effective. Policies are approved by the Board of Management and implemented in partnership with staff, parents and the wider school community.

As a multi-belief, co-educational school under the patronage of Scoil Sinéad Ltd, our policies reflect our commitment to:

Role of the Board of Management

The Board of Management has overall responsibility for the governance, leadership and oversight of Scoil Sinéad National School. The Board works in partnership with the patron, the principal, staff, parents and the wider school community to ensure the school is managed in a safe, effective and transparent manner.

The Board’s work is carried out in accordance with the Education Act (1998), Department of Education regulations, and relevant circulars and guidelines.

Responsibilities of the Board

The Board of Management is responsible for:

  • Upholding the ethos of the school in accordance with the patron’s vision
  • Ensuring the safety, wellbeing and protection of all pupils and staff
  • Overseeing school policies and procedures
  • Supporting the implementation of the Primary Curriculum Framework
  • Managing school finances responsibly
  • Supporting the Principal in the day-to-day leadership of the school
  • Ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements

Composition of the Board

The Board of Management is made up of representatives from:

  • Two Patron nominees
  • Two parents of children attending the school.
  • Teaching staff
  • The principal (as Secretary to the Board)
  • Two community representatives

Board members are appointed in line with Department of Education procedures and serve a fixed term.

Patron & Governance

Scoil Sinéad National School operates under the patronage of Scoil Sinéad Ltd.

The patron appoints representatives to the Board and supports the school’s multi-belief ethos, inclusive practices and commitment to equality and respect for all children and families.

Meetings & Decision-Making

The Board of Management meets regularly up to 5 times throughout the school year. Meetings focus on:

  • Policy development and review
  • School planning and improvement
  • Health, safety and child protection
  • Finance and resources.

All decisions are made in the best interests of the pupils and the school community, and minutes are recorded in accordance with governance guidelines.

Policies & Transparency

The Board of Management is responsible for the approval and review of all school policies. Approved policies are available on the Policies section of the school website.

The Board is committed to openness, accountability and effective communication with the school community, while respecting confidentiality where required.

Communication with the School Community

The Board of Management is committed to open and appropriate communication with parents and carers, while respecting confidentiality and the statutory role of the Board.

Parents are kept informed about the work of the Board through:

  • Agreed school communications, including newsletters and website updates.
  • Policy updates published on the school website
  • Information shared at school events and meetings where appropriate.
  • Communication facilitated through the principal, who acts as Secretary to the Board

While the Board does not engage in individual or operational matters, it ensures that decisions affecting the school community are communicated clearly and in a timely manner, in line with Department of Education guidance.

This approach supports transparency, trust and effective partnership between the Board, school staff and families.

The Board communicates through agreed school channels to ensure consistency, clarity and respect for governance procedures.
