Physical Education

Physical Education, Active Learning & Wellbeing

At Scoil Sinéad National School, Physical Education (PE) plays an important role in supporting children’s physical development, confidence, wellbeing and enjoyment of movement. Our PE provision is aligned with the Primary PE Curriculum and promotes active, healthy lifestyles for all pupils.

Swimming

Swimming is an important life skill and forms part of our PE programme where feasible. Through swimming, pupils are supported to:

  • Develop water confidence and safety awareness.
  • Improve coordination, strength and endurance.
  • Build confidence and independence.

Swimming programmes are organised in line with curriculum objectives and school planning. Parents are informed in advance regarding schedules, arrangements and any associated costs.

Gymnastics

Gymnastics is included as part of our PE curriculum and supports children to develop:

  • Balance, coordination and flexibility
  • Strength and body awareness
  • Confidence in movement and physical expression

Gymnastics lessons focus on skill development, safe movement and positive participation, allowing children to progress at their own pace.

Active Homework

To support children’s physical wellbeing and engagement, Scoil Sinéad National School is trialling Active Homework as part of our approach to becoming a more active school.

On designated days, traditional written homework may be replaced with short, purposeful physical activities such as:

  • Walking, skipping or simple fitness challenges.
  • Outdoor play tasks
  • Movement-based family activities

Active Homework encourages healthy habits, family involvement and balance between learning and wellbeing.

Active Week

Active Week is a whole-school initiative designed to celebrate movement, teamwork and fun. It takes place during the February midterm period and includes a range of structured and enjoyable activities such as:

  • PE-based games and challenges
  • Obstacle courses
  • Skipping and fitness activities
  • External providers delivering age-appropriate sessions.

Active Week supports inclusion, participation and enjoyment of physical activity for all pupils.

Our Active School Approach

Across the school, we aim to:

  • Increase daily movement opportunities.
  • Encourage positive attitudes towards physical activity.
  • Support children’s physical and emotional wellbeing.
  • Create an active, inclusive school culture.

We believe that active children are more engaged, confident and ready to learn.

Through PE, Active Homework and Active Week, we aim to help children develop lifelong habits that support health, wellbeing and enjoyment of movement.
